The proposed Cagayan-Iligan Corridor Line of the Mindanao Railways project will have main terminals at Linamon and Jasaan. According to the proposal, Express Stations will be put up at Iligan Port, Laguindingan Airport, and Agora Terminal in Cagayan de Oro City. Intermediate stations will be constructed in each municipality along the corridor.

In previous gatherings, Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Constantino Jaraula said the proposed project will construct elevated railways in both Iligan and Cagayan de Oro because of space limitations. In Cagayan de Oro City, from Opol, it will pass beside Westbound (Bulua) Terminal acorss Ayala Property then proceed towards and along the 5th bridge then another elevated railway up to Agora Terminal similar to the MRT/LRT system in Metro Manila.

Trains to be used will be Diesel-Electric Multiple Units with maximum speed of 160 kph, 6-car trains, and seating capacity of 400 passengers. The final feasibility study was submitted last August 10, 2009 and is now under review by DOTC. The following months will have field works focusing on environmental, traffic and geodetic surveys as well as railway planning and engineering studies. by damarre

A local daily has quoted Rep. Rufus Rodriguez saying that the Mindanao Railways project would commence before the year-end. This after the Project Management Office was recently established in Bulua, Cagayan de Oro City to oversee the preparation and implementation of the project.

The project which is estimated to cost around $800 million with the first phase of the project from Cagayan de Oro City to Laguindingan in Misamis Oriental has been approved by the Committee on Infrastructure and Urban Development of the House of Representatives. From the website of DOTC, it is stated that the revision of the Feasibility Study of the project is being finalized.

The approved Mindanao railway project will be implemented in four phases. The first phase is from Laguindingan to Cagayan de Oro City; second phase is Laguindingan to Iligan City; third phase is Cagayan de Oro to Phividec area in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental and the final phase from Iligan City to Linamon town, Lanao del Norte.

Accordingly, the facilities to be used in the railways system are modern equipment used in Europe with the first phase expected to be finished in time for the opening of the Laguindingan Airport.

Certainly, this will be Mindanao’s first and soon to further boost the island’s economy. by Damare

JUDGING from past strikes, Cagayan de Oro Mayor Constantino Jaraula said he was confident today’s transport stoppage will not paralyze public transportation in the city.

“I don’t think it will cause trouble to our operations at City Hall. All departments are business as usual,” Mayor Jaraula said of the transport strike, to be spearheaded by the militant Solidarity of Transport Alliance in Region X (Starex).

For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter

Past transport stoppages in Cagayan de Oro have not been known to cause trouble to commuters, Jaraula observed, saying drivers and operators would rather earn than lose a day’s income.

The moderate Transport Federation of Cagayan de Oro (Trafeco) said it will not join in the stoppage.

Trafeco and Starex have been at odds over policy differences, each refusing to cooperate any transport strike initiated by the other. This has polarized the local transport sector, with majority of drivers and operators not opting to join transport stoppages by both groups instead.
Despite this, the mayor said he was not taking chances.

“We have transport vehicles on standby to ferry our employees,” he said, adding transports strikes should not be made an excuse for employees not to report to work. However, he said those reporting late may be “excused.”

Jaraula said he sympathizes with the demands of the transport sector, but hopes that the protesters and the government would reach compromise so as not to prolong the conflict.

At the heart of the disagreement between the transport group and government is the Department of Transportation and Communications’ (DOTC) Order 39 and 38, which will substantially increase the fines for traffic violations.

“Mosamot kapait ang kahimtang sa mga draybers tungod sa pagpatuman sa Department Order 38 ug 39 sa Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC),” said Sonny Hinosolango, a coordinator of Starex, which is affiliated with the Pinag-isang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Opereytors Nationwide (Piston).

Hinosolango said they are expecting an 80 percent participation of public utility drivers and other selected areas in Mindanao.

The identified protest centers where the protesting drivers will congregate will be Puerto, Ororama Mega Center, Licoan, KSY and Bulua.

Piston, which claimed to have about 200,000 members nationwide and its affiliate groups, is protesting the continuous price hike of oil products.

They also denounced the recent price rollback of Petron Corporation, Chevron Philippines and Pilipinas Shell. The group said the rollback was too small to alleviate the hardship in the transport sector.

Piston is also calling on the government to immediately implement the order of Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 26 for an audit of the three oil players by the Commission on Audit, Bureau of Internal Revenue, and the Bureau of Customs.

Carmen Area, near KSY junction

Piston and its affiliates in different regions are also protesting the Department of Transportation and Communications’ (DOTC) Order nos. 39 and 38, which will substantially increase the fines for traffic violations.

They want the government to scrap the DOTC orders, which they said will spawn more corruption, particularly extortion by traffic personnel.

Incorporated in the 1950s as a brokerage & air cargo service provider, LBC had been evolving into a variety of organizational transformations to catch up with current market trends. In the early 1960s, J. Antonio Araneta purchased the company and operated as an air cargo forwarding business.

In the early ’70s, his son Carlos R. Araneta, responding to market movements that had revolutionized the forwarding business by introducing the principle of time sensitive service.

The service or another term for 24-hour courier service, which also included money remittance services, was offered for delivery anywhere in the country. It was during this period that LBC expanded and increased its Branches from the initial 13 to the current 543, covering practically every city and municipality of the country.

These developments stemmed from LBC’s expertise as a modern courier company with an instinctive commitment to express delivery. With its proven experience in supplying requirements for courier and money remittance services domestically, LBC eyed to serve the essential needs of overseas Filipinos.
